1926 Feb 26: Launched as Roma for Nav. Gen. Italiana. Sept 1: Mlv Genoa-Nap1es-New

York. 1932 Jan 2: Amalgamated into Italia Flotte Riunite.

1936 Dec 16: Transferred to Societa Italia. 1939 Sept: Laid up.

1940 Taken over by the ltalian Navy. Converted into the aircraft carrier Aquila and given new turbines. 30 kts. The concept was much criticised because the airfields on Sicily gave ltaly command ofthe seas around Malta. These airfields could not be 'sunk' whereas the sinkable Aquila was useless unless the Axis controlled the centrai Mediterranean airspace which in 1940/41 they did. In which case the ltalians did not need a carrier - and the Royal Navy submarines were extremely active in the area.

1943 Sept 8: When ltaly changed sides the Germans seized Aquila.

1944 June 20: At Genoa the ship was struck by Allied bombs.

1945 Apr 19: Attacked by ltalian two-men torpedoes and sunk before the retreating Germans could use her to block Genoa harbour
