The Federal Shipping Company's LEICESTER berthed at Wellington during the late 1940s
Built as Samesk 1944, managed by NZSC for the Ministry of Transport. Bought by Federal and renamed 1948. While on voyage in ballast Tilbury-New York she encountered a hurricane and shifting boards in the tween deck gave way allowing ballast to shift. The crew abandoned ship but six lives were lost. She was sighted still afloat four days later and towed to Bermuda. Towed to Baltimore for repairs and after a short period of service with Federal, sold in 1950. After various name and owner changes, broken up at Santander 1966. |
