On August 7, 1937, during the Spanish civil war, Monte Toro was sailing off Cape Palos on her way to Cartagena, when she was attacked by airplanes.

The Captain tried to save her and the crew by running aground on the Isla Grosa (Islas Hormigas), where she was bombed until completely destroyed.
