History Completed in December 1913 as British Mottisfont for Century Shipping Co Ltd (Harris & Dixon), London. 1916 sold to Russia and renamed Vologda for Russian Volunteer Fleet (Dobrolyot), St. Petersburg. 1918 taken over by The Shipping Controller, London. 1923 renamed Tideway for St. Mary SS Co Ltd (Pardee Williams & Co), Cardiff. 1933 sold to I. Margaronis (Rethymnis & Kulukundis), renamed Nellie and registered in Panama. 1935 transferred to Greek registry for Oceanos Maritime SS Co (I., A. & G. Margaronis), Pir?us.
At dusk on 26 Aug 1940, the Nellie was bombed and damaged by a German Ju88 aircraft (KG 30) 15 miles northeast of Kinnaird Head, while en route from Sydney, Cape Breton to London with a cargo of paper in convoy HX-65A.
Notes on event At 00.40 hours on 14 Oct 1942 the Nellie in station #96 of convoy SC-104 was hit on the port side by two torpedoes from U-607 and sank within 12 minutes. The survivors were picked up by the British rescue ship Gothland (Master James Murray Hadden, OBE) and landed at Gourock on 21 October.
